Coach G certainly started with a gritty, garage, no frills concept. The training may be the same but this is now a professional Sport. Just take a gander at ESPN 2 tonight. If you think
SICFIT is about selling a shirt you clearly are not paying close enough attention. It's not about the brand...it's about the sport.

On another note. The farmers tend to look inward and invest their time in increasing awareness to the community--think: "I'm recognizable to the community in which I belong," which is great if your commodity is apparel, or a dollar point that is tied to recognition from within the community." Then there are "hunters," which usually are the affiliate owners that seek to promote the service that they offer, and seek ways to speak to a community that knows nothing about what we do. These are the vanguards.

Second, I feel fatigue over the chronicling of "how we are cool, and how we are growing." I don't think Suzy Homemaker needs nor wants a play by play on the brand lifecycle. Rather, what we need is just a forum to see what Everyman and Everywoman is doing out there in Podunk CrossFit land. Why the need to create the aura of "exclusivity", when the original aims of Coach G were cemented on open source, gritty, ugly garages, homemade stuff--substance, not gloss.

There's a whiff of narcissism that permeates SICFIT, that is disconcerting. It doesn't need to be there. Be ye humble, o journalists. Most Crossfitters have a full plate of things going on, a lot of interests, numerous areas of expertise, the enthusiasm to learn, and are always looking for the next challenge. I agree with you that a big part about 'why' it's been so popular and had such a massive following is that most CFers use CF as a way to enhance their life.

CF is definitely part of my identity (it's in my Twitter profile and I write about it on my blog a lot), but it's not how I introduce myself. Though, the more I meet people, they more they want to know about CF and what I like about it :)

Question, with the popularity of CF and all of the media backing (e.g. Reebok's sponsorship), do you think the community will change in the future?

Great post, great insight. especially true seeing ...

Great post, great insight. especially true seeing this on Twitter - where the people you genuinely enjoy following on those that ENGAGE in subjects outside of just one. I love following a few select industry people within sports for their knowledge about a specific sport, but my interest lie within football, CrossFit, small business building, design, social media, and more - any of these I could talk to someone about for hours. A person committed to only one space has trouble growing because they don't interact with individuals outside of that space.

It's similar to a Wade Hodges (@wadehodges) post and one I did last spring that for many, CrossFit is a community similar to that of Christian faith. You can talk about a number things, but given the opportunity, you find a way to casually bring up a subject (CrossFit, your faith) into the conversation. It allows you the chance to expound upon what you believe and share your interests/passions with others - therefore inviting them to be a part of it as well.

As always, great post Web!
